No matter the age, this literary piece will capture your heart. Hazel Grace is young teen who has to deal with the problematic outcomes of having cancer. She carries an oxygen tank around with her to breathe properly due to her illness. At this point in her life, Hazel couldn't care less about anything. Forced by her mother, she attends a cancer patients group forced to speak about her progress in her treatments and life. Of course, Hazel did not enjoy it. She then meets Augustus Waters at one of these meetings. They catch each others eyes and through the course of the meeting they get to know each other. She learns that 'Gus" is cancer free. Their journey of becoming madly in love starts there.
"My mother decided i was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, ate frequently, and devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time to thinking about death" "...depression is not a side affect of cancer. depression is a side affect of dying."-page 3. Hazel Grace was not full of joy. All she mainly thought about was dying, she was tired of the life she was living, she thought she had no purpose in the world, she had nobody to love , and nobody loved her. That is until Gus opens up her heart and mind to the enjoyment of life and love. Every minute spent with Gus allowed Hazel to open up her eyes. She knew she wasn't worthless, she was loved, and deeply loved by Augustus. She's hesitant at first, she's afraid to let him in, she tells him she is a "ticking time-bomb" just waiting to explode. Gus does not seem to care. He cares and loves her. "I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you.” He wants her to know that he wants her and only her.
"Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always." And that was how it was for their remainder of their relationship. 'Okay' was their powerful word, it was their "i love you" and all the other sweet things they couldn't out into words. John Green lets us all know in this teen love affair that everyone is someone, and that they have futures, it might not come out of the blue, but they have to be patient. Our Augustus is out there somewhere. We need to know that we mean something to someone. Don't let a small bump in the road affect you for the rest of your life. Get up and be someone, either for you, or someone else. ...more "
