Jolie Carmichael, who had a very strict upbringing and is experiencing freedom for the first time when she goes to college at Nolan U where she is studying journalism. The first story the editor of the university’s paper gives her will involve interviewing members of Nolan U’s basketball team, and to say her first contact with a member of the team went badly is putting it mildly. Ben Evers, one of the members of the basketball team, has sworn off girls, as he has a tendency to fall hard and fast, and then gets his heart broken when the girl doesn’t return his feelings. His teammates have made it clear that no one is to talk to her, but when she approaches him, and pours out her heart to him, he bends then agrees to an interview and to give her relationship “lessons”. His only conditions are that their agreement is a no-strings attached, and a non-relationship lesson on sexual intimacy. It’s supposed to be a temporary, off-the-record arrangement, but Jolie finds out something that is horrifyingly disturbing, that could impact the rest of her life, not to mention her family, and she takes matters into her own hands, and against Ben’s advice.
As always, the characters in this book are realistic and so well narrated that it was sooo easy to get caught up in their lives. The appearance of characters from previous Nolan U books made this an even more enjoyable read. I adored Jolie; she is a very naive, newly minted freshman who had a very sheltered upbringing, and tends to speak before she can consider the impact that her words, or questions, will have on the recipient. I will admit that she gave me a few chuckles. I think she and Ben are perfect together, he is so kind and patient with her and I loved the way he could show her how to temper her, sometimes, over the top actions and reactions. This is a steamy college sports romance with some unexpected, and possibly triggering, twists and turn in the plot that ends with a happily ever after. Whether a reader is a fan of sports romance or not, I highly recommend this fantastic book to anyone.
