Thankfully he hadn’t used the word as a declaration. It was an endearment. One that rolled off his lips as naturally as my name and bounced in my stomach like a pinecone.
Contrast in connotation: She seems to be excited about the term of endearment the boy she likes has called her, but the use of comparing the feeling to a pine cone in her stomach contrast; this simile makes it sound painful–perhaps hinting at her uneasiness that she feels beneath the surface of this quickly developing relationship.
