He is a mechanical genius. She has a loving father who, in some ways, compensates for her blindness and fills her world with color. He is an orphan who finds himself in the Hitler Youth Academy. They are just kids. They aren’t directly involved in the war in a military sense, but are both deeply affected by it. Their life revolves around it, and, unfortunately, is defined by it. The alternating perspectives and characterization through metaphors and symbolism in itself are worth all the stars from me.

As a high school student of the early 21st century, you'd think I'd be sick of war novels by now. The Catcher in the Rye, Flight, Slaughterhouse-Five, and now All the Light We Cannot See? All year I’ve been reading war novels. What this novel made me realize, though, is that disliking a book because it’s a war novel is utterly absurd. As Mr. Vonnegut states in his book Slaughterhouse-Five, wars are like glaciers—inevitable. Unfortunately, they are a part of human life, and thus should be addressed and reflected in media. In the case of this book, the war aspect is powerful not because of the misery it brings, but because it is sometimes undermined by something that the children offer. I absolutely love the fact that the children in this book are not merely a symbol of innocence, but as something powerful, perhaps more so than war, as well. Then, when Marie-Laurie said that “it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life,” my mind was blasted (Doerr). As cliché as it is, I am inspired by this girl. Doerr can make me forget the fact that, in this book, they are in war, they are just kids, and the whole thing is probably fiction. It doesn’t matter. Marie-Laurie is telling me to live my life and that is what I will do. I am not surprise that this book won the 2014 Goodreads Choice Award. ...more "
