Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy were four normal children just like you and me, until they left home and went to stay at a professor’s house because of the war in London. During a game of hide and seek, Lucy makes a quick decision to hide in an old wardrobe and surprisingly discovers a magical world called Narnia. There, she meets a new friend, but when she goes back to tell her brothers and sisters, no time has passed and no one believes her. Finally the two older siblings decide to go talk to the professor about it and he convinces them to trust Lucy. This time they discover the world in the wardrobe, but Lucy’s friend (Mr. Tumnus) has been captured by the White Witch, who has taken over Narnia. They also find out that Edmund was already in Narnia and they become angry with him for not backing up Lucy earlier. What they don’t know is that he is under control of the White witch. They then go on many adventures to save Narnia from the reign of the White witch.

I enjoyed this book because I liked the fantasy in it and even though there are battles and wars the description of the scenes are not as gruesome as some other books I've read. I think I connect best to the second oldest sibling in this book, Susan. She is always the one that keeps her head and can be bossy at times. She wanted to go back when they entered the wardrobe, but she stayed because no one would go with her. “I-I wonder if there’s any point in going on,” said Susan. “I mean, it doesn't seem particularly safe here and it looks as if it won’t be much fun either. And it’s getting colder by the minute, and we've brought nothing to eat. What about just going home (pg. 136-135)?” I would probably be worrying about all those basic needs as well, but I don’t like to go places alone, so I would do as she did and consent to follow the others.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, but likes calm fantasy without the mass killing or the witches and ghosts. I think that even if you do like that type of content this book would still be a good read for you because it has a lot of really rich vocabulary and descriptive paragraphs that really describe the scenes in so much detail you feel as if you are really there. I think this is a good read aloud for younger children as well because if their parents read it to them, I think they would enjoy the plot of the story. They would also have a grownup to explain what some of the more complicating words meant and I think younger children will enjoy the talking animals bit. All in all I think this book is suitable for younger readers to teenagers and it is a great book to read for fun. ...more "
