"I believe the biggest surprise of this book to me was the suicide of Aimee. I cant believe she took the advice of Mr. Slump. But then again i can believe it becasue Aimee is not the smartest girl. Personally I would recommend Montana 1948 to anyone. I think the reason why I loved Montana 1948 by Larry Watson so much is because I love history. I am not saying the only people who should read this are the people who like history I think this book fits anyone. Since I love history especially Americas history I think it was easy for me to picture the book as well as I did, almost feeling like I was there with David the main character. The story takes place in Montana during 1948 with David an eleven-year-old boy telling the story as you’re on the edge of your seat.

As David goes through his life with his family and friends in a small town right outside a Native American reservation you get to learn about David but also the some of the difficulties wile living in 1948 compared to present day 2015. David comes from a family of tradition that passes down in David’s case his grandfather to his dad Wes. The first thing you notice is how different Wes is to his brother Frank Wes try’s to be like his dad but Wes lives his own life not trying to prove anything to his dad. What happens in the binging defiantly affects the end. Wes is the sheriff of this small down because the job was passed down from his dad but Wes is not the same sheriff that his dad was. Wes is a man of the law and Julian David’s grandfather was the stereotypical go get em and shoot em kind of cowboy-sheriff. This difference between the two effects David and the ending of the story in a huge way. Another thing that the story is based off of is the racism to Native Americans. When you read this book you will meet a Native American girl who goes by the name of Marie little solider I believe the only one who truly cares for her is David “Among my friends the rumor was that Frenchy kept locked in his storeroom a fat old toothless Indian woman whom anyone could have sex with for two dollars. (One of my friends hinted that this was Marie's mother, but I knew that wasn’t true" (Watson 25). This quote by Watson shows the racism towards Natives.

I think this is a well-written book that anyone should want to read and keep reading once they start. Larry Watson doesn’t tell you the story he asks you to step into a new life in Montana in 1948 with David and his family. Since I felt like I was apart of David’s life even when the book ended because Watson leaves you thinking. If I had to rate this book out of five, five being the best it would be a six because I couldn’t put it down. This book is a must read. ...more "

"After the End of the book my prediction of David stepping up and doing something failed. I thought he was going to step up because there where so much build up to david thinking that he would do something. Frank committed suicide which was very shocking to me." — Nov 16, 2015 10:40AM
