Octavian Nothing : The Kingdom of the Waves.

Whilst reading the series of Octavian Nothing I have been confused, perplexed and astonished, but I have grown to love it... even to a point where I can't stop reading the amazing story of Octavian. In the first novel : The Pox Party, Octavian finds out about the cruel experiment he and his mother partake in. When they move to the countryside to escape the anti-British, Mr.Gitney hosts a pox party trying to inculcate 33 people against the virus. When things go wrong, Octavian’s mother ends up dying and his is devastated. When he goes to say his final respects to her, he sees his mother being dissected. Octavian, filled with hate for his captors runs away to seek freedom with revolutionists in and around Boston. After being captured again by Mr.Gitney’s agents he is held captive and ends up plotting an escape with his former tutor. The second book in the series, The Kingdom of the Waves starts with Octavian running to Boston. Octavian in deeply depressed, without purpose and struggling to keep his mentor alive. But his general compassion for others and iron hard will keep him going with his fight for freedom.

I instructed him to climb upon my shoulders. /”I will drag you down, Octavian”/”You have risked your all for me, sir; and it is only right that I do the same for you.”/

Here Octavian is talking to Dr.Treferius, his mentor. Running away from their past captors the tide is setting in and it becomes hard for the old man to continue. Octavian shows his iron will when he decides to carry the man through neck deep water so he does not die. Through everything, Octavian can still show compassion for white people, still can help them and still will trust them. Octavian shows what it really means to have faith, have a goal and be able to help yourself. The story about his life growing up is truly humbling and amazing. It highlights the cruelties of slavery and the awfulness of the Revolutionary war. Due to all of these amazing concepts and stories placed within the novel I recommend anyone and everyone to read this book… 10/10. ...more "
