Most ghost stories are about the ghost haunting a helpless victim, but in Breathe a boy felt compelled to find out more about the ghosts and their pasts. Breathe became one of my favorite ghost stories along with The Old Willis Place, but only because they're different from most, you don't necessarily see that in the horror genre.

Breathe was about a boy named Jack who had just moved into an abandoned house with his mother. They were looking to escape the memories from the past, but with the new house, that soon became difficult. Jack, being a relatively normal child his age, was exploring the house when things took a turn for the worse. He discovered the cellar, he was tempted to go in, until he was stopped by his mother. While peering over her shoulder, he noticed them, sitting in the corner. They had been dead for centuries, cursed to haunt the once abandoned house, all while remaining unnoticeable. Jack was different from the many visitors, the spirits appeared alive to him. They were no longer unnoticeable. It took some time to settle into their new house, it took even more time to adjust to the new visitors. They knew they were no longer living alone.

He had nearly drifted off to sleep when he felt--a pressure. It came from the foot of the bed, as if someone had carefully sat down without wanting to disturb him. Jack barely noticed it. And if he'd already fallen asleep perhaps he wouldn't have noticed the sigh either--a long sigh against his right ear, followed by a caress that reached across his shoulders and down onto his throat. It was like a mother's caress, but it was not his mother. Jack screamed. A small, thin woman, face as pale as a white candle, was draped across his bed. Her arm was extended tenderly toward him. Her eyes, in the moonlight, we're black as a bird's.

In the horror genre, I've noticed that not many stories include a little boy who can see ghosts. Mainly because it sounds a little cliché, but if done right, it can be amazing. While reading Breathe, I found myself on the edge of my seat because certain moments like the previous one. It was scary and believable. Given the backstory and the context, I believed it. Nothing about this was expected, and I was unprepared. The style of writing made me feel more engaged than most books, it was simple, but also complex. I would've never expected Jack to be able to see ghosts, but the author wrote it in a way that made Jack seem like he was your average growing boy who was just a little curious at most. Overall, this book was different than most ghost stories, and I liked it. I'm looking forward to read more of Jack's struggles and his developing abilities. ...more "
