Thirteen Reasons Why By Jay Asher (288 pg.)

Hannah Baker is dead now, and all that’s left of her is a set of thirteen audio tapes revealing why things took a turn for the worst. An hour after School Clay Jensen a teenage boy in high school finds a package left outside his house with his name Scribbled on the lid. Though, after opening the package he discovers this isn’t any ordinary box consisting of something his mom bought online. It’s a set of seven audio tapes each with a number labeled with blue nail polish on each side. Rushing into the garage he dusts off his old cassette player and pops open the tray. As he begins listening to the tapes Hannah Bakers voice comes on. She explains that there are thirteen reasons why she committed suicide corresponding with thirteen people that were sent the tapes. Clay is dumbfounded, wondering why in the world he would be mailed these tapes and the only way to find out is to press play.

In This book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher Clay (the protagonist) is affected greatly. He learns the truth behind Hannah Bakers death and his life is potentially changed forever. I think Clay takes out of the tapes, that these reasons weren't huge, drastic, horrible reasons that Hannah killed herself. They were small reasons that any teenager could have witnessed in his or her life time. Hannah wanted people to save her and if someone may have just read between the lines they could have. The problem is people weren't aware of suicide, nobody knew, and in this case ignorance is not bliss.

The book I read was very unique, so I had a tough time finding a book to compare it to, though finally I succeeded. The book I choose to compare it to is Out of My Mind. this is a story about a girl with cerebral palsy and how she faces dealing with daily challenges of life (including people who judge her by what's on the outside and not by the young and very intelligent girl on the inside). Even though I couldn't personally relate to these characters, both books made me feel connected to the protagonist in a way that left me thinking about these stories countless times even after they were over. The impact these books had on me was immense. Therefore, have decided to rate this book a four out of five stars. I believe it was a great book full of detail and emotion. I could picture the scenes just as I was witnessing them with my own eyes. The book grabbed me and I wanted more. Though, the only reason I gave it four stars and not a five star rating was because, by the end of the book I could say it was a bit heavier than my liking and some of the content was a little mature. Though, the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher was an amazing novel and gave me an experience like nothing else I've ever read. ...more "
