Whether it's little details, such as Harker's vivid, physical, description of the 3 women that he encounters while held captive in the Count's castle or the scene in which the Count's ships miraculously harbors on the coast of Great Britain, ushered in by the storm and with a two-days dead captain at the helm, we believe these unbelievable details because of Stoker's attention to detail and careful choice of words in telling his tale. And evidence of the extensive research done by Stoker is evident everywhere, but not in your face--Hemingway, writing after Stoker, had a theory about writing being like an iceberg or something, and felt that if the writer did his job effectively, he told 10% of it (the part of the iceberg above the water) and, from that telling, the writer knew the balance. In other words, to write a great piece, expect your reader to have a certain knowledge level that they, as responsible readers, will bring to the work. Compare this to more contemporary works, like Rowlings Potter series, for instance, and the difference is clear--100 years from now, people will still be reading Dracula,, Harry Potter not so much! The Epistolary style, coupled with the credibility of characters, also lend veracity to the tale. For instance, when Mina is keeping her thoughts in her diary, for her eyes only and as a way of practicing her shorthand skills, we have no need to question that we are reading anything but her actual truth--same with Dr Seward--
Those are my thoughts, for those who care! Going to get off of here, and read a couple more chapters before going to bed. If you can't tell from this rambling, I highly recommend the novel!...more
