Louie was one of the best mile runners in America at the time. In 1936 he wen I recently read "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. Everyone in my family has read this book, and it finally got passed down to me to read. This book is about Louie Zamperini. Louie was one of the best mile runners in America at the time. In 1936 he went to the Olympics to run the 5000 meter race for America. He finished 8th, but his final lap was all that mattered, Louie ran a 56 second final lap. Smashing his previous record. His finish was so impressive that he got to meet, and shake Adolf Hitler's hand. Before the war broke out, Louie decided to join the air corps, but he hated it so much that he quit. When war did start, because of his past experience in the air corps, Louie was drafted in as a bombardier. He had to over come his hate of flying, but it all came back when one mission his plane was shoot down. Louie spent 47 days on a raft in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Finally on the 47th days his raft drifted into the side of a Japanese ship. From there Louie went to prison camp for years where he was brutally beaten, and starved almost to death. The guard named "the Bird" was the worst to Louie, He would beat Louie for no reason on a daily basses. Near the end of the war the "Bird" to gave Louie a very heavy wooden beam above his head, and when he dropped it the guard would shoot him. Amazingly Louie held it over his head for 37 minutes until he was punched. Another time the Bird had everyone in the camp punch Louie in the face as hard as they could, 220 times. After the war ended Louie stayed in camp until the allies were able to evacuate the POW's. When Louie came back to America he said with his family, until he went on a trip and met his wife Cynthia Applewhite. But with struggling from post dramatic stress, and lots of drinking, their marriage almost ended, until Louie turned his life to God at a Billy Graham sermon. He began speaking about his events to schools and churches across America. I thought this was a great book. Louie's story is truly fascinating, how he got through everything he did is amazing. My favorite part of the book is when he is at the olympics and he steals a Nazi flag from the hotel he was staying at. I would recommend this book to everyone I think could handle it because it hard to hear the things that the Japanese did to the POW's. ...more "
