LISTEN, I HAVE THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THIS BOOK, and not all positive. The story is there, the writing is absolutely NOT. It is so SO important here to separate Violet’s story from the way Yarros wrote it. Fourth Wing had me in a chokehold, and I was so obsessed with this fantasy world she had created that I paid no attention to anything other than what was happening. It was so easy to not look too deep into it but the same cannot be said for Iron Flame. It is very much apparent that she did not put in the same time and effort into Iron Flame as she did 4W. Reading it was honestly painful.
As readers, we’re so used to the normal story arc, a steady flow that builds up to the climax that spans the entirety of the book. Iron Flame is not that. The pacing of the book is so odd, almost wave like. Halfway in, you essentially start to expect it. Each wave ends with a new addition to the plot or a whole other subplot, which could be fine except there is such an extensive amount of information overload in each wave that I just began feeling lost. It doesn’t give the reader a chance to THINK, basically drowning you in multiple happenings all at once. This leads me into my next point, it’s also interesting to note that The Empyrean series is signed on to become a TV show, this weird waved storyline we see in Iron Flame, it’s almost as if she paced it like episodes and suddenly it made so much sense. She wrote a screenplay, not a book.
And the character speech/dialogue, like WHAT? I was so mad. You have this phenomenal story with such intricate twists, yet your characters don’t know how to speak to each other??? How are you going to have one character say, “I am going to miss you” and have the other respond with “same”. THIS IS A ROMANTASY, USE YOUR WORDS BECKY. I’m not saying there weren’t some great things said, but sadly just not enough.
The whole book essentially was Violet going “but trust!!” and Xaden arguing “but love!!” with a side of dragons and fighting. The only real ones in this book are Tarin and Andarna. AND RIDOC<3. Also Sawyer.
Also, let’s take a moment for the mommy issues girlies, no I will not be elaborating.
Lastly, as always, STFU Dain you little weasel.
I AM looking forward to where the STORY goes, but her writing has and will hold it back if things don’t change. It so apparent that she is not a fantasy author, romance maybe, but high fantasy, no. ...more "
