I don’t know if there could’ve been a more brutal ending than that .. like genuinely I don’t think there’s any way to fix it lol
Just want to start off by saying that I preferred this book over the first; the pacing seemed much better, better charabro

Just want to start off by saying that I preferred this book over the first; the pacing seemed much better, better character arcs, felt like higher stakes, etc.
However, miscommunication is my least favourite trope ever and Will dug his grave deeper than the Dark King’s army was underground.
- If anyone would’ve understood him it would’ve been Violet if he had told her from the beginning because she had experienced that too with the Stewards wanting her dead due to her being a Lion.
- I have a hard time believing he actually cares about James from his refusal to tell him the truth; when he told James “you shouldn’t have come here” and wanted to tell him to run .. why didn’t he? Why did he allow James to stay with him — the revelation that James might’ve not been acting of his own free will the entire book made me ill.
All the miscommunication led to the worst possible ending because now Cyprian has become what he swore not to be and is cursed to die soon while James is once again irreversibly a slave to someone he trusted and thought had saved him.
Also I need to add that Violet and Cyprian have torn my heart to shreds I am so miserable about how they’re inevitably going to end up
One last point — this author’s favourite expression is truly that a character “flushed” because if I took a shot everytime someone flushed in this book I’d be in the morgue.
Anyhow .. great book but that was absolutely brutal and I kinda wish it ended after the first book so I could make up my own ending...more
