I already owned three books in the series without ever reading word by this author. I had some concerned that it would not live up the expectations I had set for it based on the reviews of others. Fortunately my worries were extremely short lived, the beginning was the standard slower pace of the first book in a fantasy series but once it got going it took me on a fantastic journey.

The characters were incredible, Senlin was fantastically well written. It was refreshing to read about a character that is not the chosen one or the most powerful that has been seen in hundreds of years, he is just a regular guy who has to learn to survive horrible circumstances with his smarts. Along the way he encounters a cast of fully developed side characters. Even the bad ones were still great characters and I understood their motivations. My favorites were Ogier the misunderstood painter with secrets of his own and Adamos another poor soul in search of a missing family member.

The tower itself is an amazing creation that allows for a very unique adventure. It allows access to so many incredible locations with out all the walking that is generally required. The Basement full of low level merchants and thieves. The Parlor full of people trying to escape their everyday lives was the most interesting to me. The Baths full of luxury that seems designed to force people into debt to create more Hods(slaves). These bottom levels seem are the ones more geared towards tourists. Once you get to New Babel, full of the more successful merchants and airship ports. Every level brings a new world to the story and it is incredible to read.

I had a few other books on my list to read after this but they have been put on hold, I found myself unable to focus as I was not yet ready to leave this world, so I picked up Arm of the Sphinx so I could stay a while longer.

I recommend this to any fan of fantasy, but especially if you are looking for a somewhat different yet spectacular read. ...more "
