" i was the biggest alchemised sceptic before I read it. as it blew up on tiktok I thought to myself what is possibly the reason to read something branded everywhere as dark and traumatising and tragic. so i satisfied my curiosity by reading every spoi i was the biggest alchemised sceptic before I read it. as it blew up on tiktok I thought to myself what is possibly the reason to read something branded everywhere as dark and traumatising and tragic. so i satisfied my curiosity by reading every spoiler and accepted this just wasn't the book for me. I tried manacled a while back and a couple of pages in just thought this is too unnecessarily dark and miserable. but alas the tiktok algorithm kept feeding me the most gloriously raving reviews of alchemised to a point I had to just listen to the first chapter to confirm that I just didnt need to read this book. to my utmost surprise, I quickly realised that alongside the darkness was actually a beautifully written work of literature, and as I got further the structure of this story was the true wonder of it, so that even having read the spoilers before it still felt incredible moving between parts 1 and 2 and having part 3 interconnect everything slowly back together. the memory aspect of this is truly wondrous, and though the happily ever after (if such a book can ever be called that) felt like the most boring part, and I didn't agonisingly cry at any point, and I'm not sure where the climax was and I was almost expecting something a little more before they escaped- i realise that was never the point, it was never to build towards something huge but for the whole everything to be that important thing, and actually the slow tediousness of the ending actually fits into a deliberate juxtaposing structuring of realising everything their life wasn't and should have been.
this book swallowed me for a while, in a soul altering, nothing will ever compete kind of way. without a doubt this will be the best written standalone book I will ever read, nothing can or will do this again in such a particular and effective way. so though I was so anti this book and truly embodied the tiktoks where people take huge books to the sound of 'is it ever really this serious?", yes it is that serious. and yes, this is painful but never in a way that is not necessary to all that it is, never in a way that is not later softened by something a little alike a rose in a graveyard. I did now just go and buy a £30 imported edition with sprayed edges, and I may just start the audiobook again because I need to hear part 1 and 2 again, maybe backwards, maybe just over and over again because it will never not be this thing that swallows me in its subtle beauty and darkness that somehow, aesthetically, becomes comforting. ...more "
