So, this book left me with some mixed feelings and a lot of questions.

There are some really great concepts and tropes in this book, but also things that felt a little off and, for me, they made the book not as enjoyable as it could have been.

One thing that I adore is the premise of the story. A girl that deals with what-ifs scenarios all the time, that is also a scryer, has to find a way to change a tragic future that she foretold, while learning about her abilities in a shady secret organization? Sign me up.
I love how the world-building blends fantasy with science and technology, and how there's political and economical problems within the scryers like in every complex society. But the way that the story is told it's a little confusing and it leaves you wishing to know more. We learn about this world along with Cassie, the main character, so there is a few chapters that slow the pacing with full info-dumps and new characters introduction, and it's hard to keep track of names and roles when the rhythm picks up again. For me, this happened a lot through the pages.

Let's talk representation. Cassandra has OCD and is not something that is only mentioned, but it is key to the plot. It interweaves with the story and, in my opinion, it actually shows what it is to live with intrusive thoughts and severe anxiety. As someone who struggles with obsessive thinking, i think the author did a good job with how OCD is portrayed. I also took in mind that it's an #ownvoices story.
But that's where the representation ends. If I don't recall wrong, the rest of the characters (except Mrs. O) are white, cis, hetero and able-bodied. There is a hint that Sebastian might be bisexual, but he's also referred in the same page as "a bit of a whore" so I'm not counting that as representation.

And then, we have the relationships.
The romance in this book is at the same time insta-love and slow burn, because Cassie has this intense connection with Colin at the start but their relationship is put on pause when Cassie leaves, so it felt rushed and superficial when they finally got together. They could have been bestfriends, but then how the not-so-subtle future love triangle could exist?
Also, Cassie's new friends felt a little stereotypical: Reagan, smart and supportive bestfriend with all the important info; Griffin, comic relief guy that is kind of a bully; and Noah, the shy dorky guy. They grow on you later, but they do start pretty bland.

In the end, there is a lot of subplots that makes the reading experience a little hard and confusing, but once you have all the information and get to the action parts, you can't put the book down.
Overall, I liked it and I might read the sequel because i really liked the concept and would love to know how the story further develops. ...more "
