One person that gave this book 5 stars said “As a journalist for the events, Dave Cullen brings a wonderful perspective and his writing pulls the reader in throughout the piece.” I agree with this because I think Dave Cullen really made the reader feel like they were there during this horrific time with the families and staff members. So far, I think this book deserves 4 stars and not 5, because I think it was a very powerful read and it was also organized very well but also began to become a little repetitive half way through which disengaged me. The author definitely had to have spent a lot of time writing this because he had to get many people's thoughts and fact straight. I think that a person that wants an overpowering read should read this book as well as a person that wants to learn more about this tragedy and how much one event affected their community forever. I think people should read this book because it helps kids be more aware of seeing signs of important issues like suicide or gun violence. A lot of my Goodreads updates related to connections during the book. Throughout the book, I expressed how I was different from certain characters because they were mentally ill. For example, Eric was a psychopath and I am not a psychopath at all and do not have a mental illness.

I think a strength in the book was how well it was written. The transitions from talking about one person to the next was very smooth. It made me want to keep reading to find out about how every person the author was talking about was doing. The author also did an incredible job with describing the killers and getting information from their therapists and psychiatrists that actually diagnosed Eric as a psychopath. The amount of sourcing and side stories put into the book to add to the story was very intriguing. Some of the information in this book was very fascinating and I think I learned a few things from it. On the other hand, there were some moments that were very brutal and heart breaking but it made the read powerful. All in all, I thought that this book so far was a very enthralling read. At times, it had me so locked in that I felt like I was there in that moment. The hardships throughout represent a struggle that these people tried to overcome thus far in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an intense and knowledgeable read because it definitely caught my attention. ...more "
