Sandford usually writes to very high standards and in turn my expectations are high. This is an early example of the over-writing that is so common in Golden Prey. The qualifying phrase "If, in fact, that was Poole at all" needs to be in the quoted paragraph twice more, or not at all. I can hear somebody (maybe Ros?) saying "Wait, John-- you haven't established that it was Poole... let's not spoil things." The reader already knows, so this is not a spoiler in any sense, and it just reads "dumb."
