“Only where there is disillusionment and depression and sorrow does happiness arise: without the despair of loss, there is no hope.”

“Marathon
2. Song of the River
Once we were happy, we had no memories.
For all the repetition, nothing happened twice.
We were always walking parallel to a river
with no sense of progression
though the trees across from us
were sometimes birch, sometimes cypress-
the sky was blue, a matrix of blue glass.
While, in the river, things were going by-
a few leaves, a child's boat painted red and white,
its sail stained by the water-
As they passed, on the surface we could see ourselves;
we seemed to drift
apart and together, as the river
linked us forever, though up ahead
were other couples, choosing souvenirs.”
― The Triumph of Achilles

“And perhaps you should get some new stories, so I don’t fucking kill myself of boredom.”

“Humans were so circular; they lived the same slow cycles of joy and misery over and over, never learning. Every lesson in the universe had to be taught billions of times, and it never stuck.
Maybe it was good that the world forgot every lesson, every good and bad memory, every triumph and failure, all of it dying with each generation. Perhaps this cultural amnesia spared them all. Perhaps if they remembered everything, hope would die instead.”
