At first I was a bit skeptical about this book, it's written entirely as a "flashback", which I generally don't like. The pale blood, priest, and whatever other names he has, Gabriel "G 4.5 stars, listened to Audible. Excuse any misspelling of names.

At first I was a bit skeptical about this book, it's written entirely as a "flashback", which I generally don't like. The pale blood, priest, and whatever other names he has, Gabriel "Gabe" de Lion reminisces on his life by telling his tale to a historian vampire who holds him captive. Gabriel is a legend among his kind. He tells the tale of his childhood and how he came to be as he is.

The book started a bit slow (especially in the 15 year old range) but eventually really caught my attention with the action. Gabe has had a turbulent youth. His character is so masterfully crafted, I can totally sympathize with him. He is swept from his home and enters the Brotherhood after he makes the mistake of feeding on his girlfriend. He loses everything in that moment, even himself, because he doesn't know who he is. The Brotherhood are pious fucks. Everything is God's plan according to them. Gabe becomes one himself, but also still strives to become the hero, the best. He is wholeheartedly honest to himself, he admits his sins for Pride and the desire to be somebody. He was told he is lesser than his kin because his father is none of the prestigious bloodlines, but he is determined to prove everyone wrong. His attitude gets him into precarious situations within the Brotherhood, but also outside (he gets himself the special attention of the Forever King and his offspring). Eventually he loses faith and abandons the Brotherhood. This is where things really get interesting.

Things I absolutely adored in this book:
- Gabe and his badass attitude. Everything he does and says screams don't mess with me, but he's actually got a big heart.
- Ashdrinker (a talking, slightly lunatic but sympathetic sword)
- Dior la Chance (101 on how to go from absolutely disliking a character to absolutely loving one). Gabe and Dior's progressing relationship in this book is probably one of my favorite things ever.
- Astrid (cue tears)

Things I didn't like so much:
- Chloe Sauvage
- the lying bastards in the Brotherhood

I'll definitely read the next book! I can't not read on with that ending, FFS. I'm also really looking forward how things are going to be progressing with Lyathe (no idea how to write her name though) and the secrets behind Gabe's bloodline. ...more "
