Those trips to the observatory became a new family tradition, exactly the kind of happy, ordinary childhood experience I wanted the boys to have. Ethan was a bit young, but Wesley was quickly engaged. The more he learned, the more

“For one thing, this steady devaluation of the dollar is a new practice, relatively speaking. For most of our country’s history, the dollar gained value. The dollar was worth 75 percent more in 1912 than it was worth in 1800. You know those stories your parents or grandparents tell about how they used to buy a sandwich and a fountain soda for a dime? How everything was so much cheaper back in the day? If you were around in 1900, for instance, the old folk didn’t tell those sorts of stories. What cost a dime in 1900 probably cost fifteen cents in 1875, and twenty cents in 1800.
Of course, since 1912, the dollar has lost more than 95 percent of its value....You will remember what happened in 1913: the Fed was created.”

“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Our times are in his hand who saith, 'A whole I planned, youth shows but half; Trust God: See all, nor be afraid!”

“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.”

“Douglass and Lincoln had established a relationship that would prove important for both men in the weeks and months ahead. In subsequent speeches, Douglass frequently commented on his gracious reception at the White House. “Perhaps you may like to know how the President of the United States received a black man at the White House,” he would say. “I will tell you how he received me—just as you have seen one gentleman receive another.” As the crowd erupted into “great applause,” he continued, “I tell you I felt big there!”
