I am more of a fantasy reader myself. I truly love all things strange, abnormal and magical. So as you can imagine this book was out of my "comfort zone". Despite that fact, I knew (thanks to multiple warnings from other reader friends) that if I didn't change up my style a little and read something different, I could very likely get burned out with Fantasy.
So, I decided to read "The Book Thief." The main reason I chose this book being because it was the first one that jumped out at me when I first walked into Barnes and Nobles. The second one was due to the fact I had stuck it in my 'to-read' shelf back in 2015.
Thus, I had long forgotten what this book was even about by the time I flipped to the first page. Nonetheless, I was intrigued. In fact, I'm glad I didn't know much about this amazing novel when I began. If I had, I think it would have taken away from the experience. And let me just tell you, when I discovered who the narrater was I.....ALMOST....LOST....IT.
No seriously, I am 99% sure I was hyperventilating with excitement.
It was at precisely that moment (pg 5) that I realized this was going to be a story that I not only enjoyed, but one I would never forget.
In short, and in effort not to spoil anything, let's talk characters.
I loved them all. Some expectedly more than others. But there was not one of them that I thought at some point in the book was unnecessary.
Marcus Zusak did an amazing job with EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Not to mention the writing! How flippin' FANTASTIC was this guy's writing?!
I'll answer, INCREDIBLY SO!
I mean from the metaphors, and descriptions to the heart stopping quotes that still haunt me.
Absolute perfection.
All in all, this is a very brutally honest story that shows us a different point of view from what we are used to. But that is precisely what makes it.
I smiled.
I gritted my teeth in anger.
I stuck my face in the pages to conceal my laughter.
I cried.
What more could you possibly ask for in a book? What more could you possibly be given, what more could be torn out of you?
No matter where you currently stand with this book (read, unread or currently reading.) I can assure you of this much.
"The Book Thief" is a book like no other. It's harsh, it's painful and it's beautiful. And I myself could not be happier with the fact. As a recommendation, put this book on your bucket list. Because, in a certain someone's own words,
