“Yesterday a noise woke me with a start in the early hours. My grandmother passed the last years of her life in the house next to ours, and every night a nurse used to come to care for her. Sometimes, when the nurse was asleep, my grandmother would try to get up unassisted and then fall. When that happened, the nurse would come knocking on our door to ask for help. Since that time, now long after my grandmother’s death, loud noises in the night have woken me with the same concern that she’s had a fall. Yesterday I didn’t think about my grandmother; my fear was nameless and I thought of all the future nights when I would awake with this fear.”
