“I warn the reader that this chapter requires careful reading, and that I am unable to make myself clear to those who refuse to be attentive.”

“Unease, fear, guilt, and lack of confidence. Resentment is the other side of that. It is your shadow. It is a false and fake gold. Resentment is a trap of the heart into which everyone falls.”

“Hope is a torturous thing. It wrenches one from despair just long enough to allow one to take a breath before plunging her back beneath the icy waters. If it wasn't for those breaths, it would be easy to let ice claim the soul. Easy to let surrender swallow the struggle. But hope - cruel mistress that she is - is not satisfied with so neat an ending. Like a house cat with a tiny prisoner, she wants only to torment the soul again, and again, until it dies from a burst heart.”

“China and America are very different. So are the sun and moon, but both bring light into the world.”

“What do you do when you’re hurt?” I stuttered, trying hard to keep my burning tears back so I wouldn’t cry in front of him, even though I had no doubt he’d be a safe person to cry to. “I curse,” he stated matter-of-factly. “And trust me, sailors have some very creative ones. I’d demonstrate, but I’m afraid they’re too indelicate for a lady’s ears.” He winked, and my responding snort came out as a half-laugh, half-sob. “Would you be brave enough to ever curse in front of me?” He considered. “I suppose I would if we’re to have a marriage where we can be ourselves around one another and accept one another for who we are, while also encouraging the other to be better.” “So you want a marriage where you’d be comfortable enough that you could curse, but I’d encourage you not to do so in the future?” He grinned, causing me to tentatively smile in return. “Exactly.”
