New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris released the first book in her Southern Vampire Mysteries series on May 1, 2001. The book, titled Dead Until Dark tells the story of Sookie Stackhouse, a young waitress who lives in a world where vampires and humans are legal citizens living somewhat similar lives. When Sookie gets into a relationship with her vampire neighbor, Bill, her world turns upside down.

The 292 page novel keeps readers engaged from beginning to end. From violent action scenes to dramatic love quarrels between human and vampire, something interesting and entertaining occurs at least once in every single chapter. Many readers may compare this book to the highly popular Twilight Saga. If the rest of The Southern Mysteries novels as as good as the first, I would highly recommend this series over Twilight any day. In my opinion, Dead Until Dark is more mature than Twilight. There is sex, violence, gore, and language: everything Twilight doesn't have. The tweens across the world that are reading Twilight probably shouldn't read Dead Until Dark or any of it's successors for a few years because the language of the overall story is much more adult that anything Twilight's author, Stephanie Meyer has ever written.

Many of the elements in Dead Until Dark are incredibly similar to gay rights. The way vampires are treated while the story takes place are very similar to the way gays are treated in the United States especially. While many people support gay rights and gay marriage, many people are also very much opposed to the mere thought of it. In Dead Until Dark, similar sides are taken when it comes to the way vampires are be treated. Many people in the novel believe that vampires shouldn't be given the same opportunities that humans are given because they are no longer living. There is also the factor that people are very much afraid of the vampires because they are stronger than humans, meaning it would be difficult to punish them.

All in all, Dead Until Dark is an interesting novel that is not for people of all ages. Many of the elements and plot lines in the story are not for a younger audience, but if the book gets into the hands of an appropriate and mature reader, the contents can easily be enjoyed. The Southern Vampire Mysteries have also been chronicled in the HBO original series, True Blood. Each season of the series is introduced as one entire season of the show. As of December 2010, three seasons, (the equivalent of the first three novels,) have been released on TV and DVD. So far, Charlaine Harris has released 10 original Southern Vampire Mysteries novels.
