Rather than retelling a popular and well-known myth, this story offered more freedom since it was inspired by Psyche and Eros but didn’t have a strict formula to follow.

I’m a sucker for morally grey characters, so Eros had me hooked. Kudos to Robert on developing a believably (you know, as far as the fantasy genre can be anyway) diverse cast of characters. Hermes is brilliant, and I would’ve loved to see more of her—I’m hoping she gets a book of her own in this series. In this version of the myth, Psyche is a plus-sized influencer who deals with all the nasty comments and issues you can imagine come with that job. A lot of them are delivered by Aphrodite who begins the book by commanding her son (Eros) to bring her Psyche’s heart—literally. I appreciated how Psyche and Eros dealt with the societal expectations as well as each other’s.

The world-building offered more glimpses into Olympus. I didn’t think I was a fan of urban fantasy, but this series has shifted my perspective. The influence of Greek myths and characters is clear, but the author isn’t zealously adhering to the established storylines. So far, the changes are interesting rather than upsetting, which is working for me. I’m hoping that Robert continues adding more details about Olympus and it’s relationship with the outside world in the coming books.

This book also introduced more characters, specifically the Kasios siblings: Perseus, Helen, and Eris. Perseus is the new Zeus. All three are minor/background characters here but will be very important in future books. I’m glad that Helen is so fun since she’s the protagonist in the next book (which, I admit, I ordered and plan on reading as soon as it arrives). I can’t mention the reasons behind the other two siblings’ increased importance because of spoilers. However, I’m really looking forward to reading Perseus’ story—hopefully it’s coming soon.

I was VERY skeptical at first, but I’m glad I jumped on this bandwagon because it has been a fun ride so far. Here’s to hoping the rest of the series only continues to improve. Pick these up if you like Greek myths, a blend of fantasy and the modern world, diverse characters, and don’t mind the spice (because there’s plenty). ...more "
