One Slap:
and That Was That

The realistic fiction book Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn is a gripping book about the mistakes that cannot be erased. Nick believes it is ok to abuse a girl but as he steps into the Florida courthouse for counts of abuse from his ex-girlfriend, he finds that things are not so funny anymore. Through the book, Nick finds ways to cope with his anger. Nick also keeps a journal, which he uses to explore his emotions and feelings. Overall, the book taught me lessons that I can use through life. This was a great book because of the suspense, engaging storyline, and the life lessons taught.
One of the reasons I like this book is because it was suspenseful. One example of the book’s suspense is when the judge decides Nick’s punishment for abusing Caitlin, his ex-girlfriend. “I wanted to bolt. Last week, Mario said if you think you are about to lose it, take a walk. I can’t. I hold my desk like a life raft. If I go ballistic, they’ll think they’re right.” (pg. 43) This quote demonstrates that Nick has a very difficult time dealing with his anger.
Another reason that I like this book is because of the dramatic storyline. One reason I like the storyline is because it relates well to real life. Many people in this world find themselves in abusive relationships, whether they are the abuser or the victim. “I never hit her. Caitlin is making this up to get back at me for breaking up with her. She’s nuts. My face hardens. The mask takes over. She doesn’t need a restraining order. She’s flattering herself if she thinks I’d waste my time.” (pg. 7) This quote shows that Nick is in denial about his actions and his serious problems. While I do not know anyone is a physically abusive relationship, this did remind me of people I know who are unable to see the problems that are clearly in front of them.
The final reason why I love this book is because it taught me life lessons. One example of a lesson I learned is that you have to be responsible for your actions. Also, there are always consequences for your actions. Finally, I learned the importance of not taking the people who care about you for granted. “I was right. Her kiss was all that mattered.” (pg. 55) This quote shows that Nick learned a lesson in the book about taking control of his life and apologizing to the woman he loves.
This was a great book because of the suspense, engaging storyline, and the life lessons taught. I give this book four out of five stars because of how well it captured the emotions of the characters. My mom always says that a man is lying if he ever hits you and says that he is sorry and that he will not do it again. Recently my friend and I went to a movie and a man came and sat next to us in the empty theater. The man touched my friend inappropriately. As we ran to the bathroom I tried to calm her down, but the man chased us. My friend and I reported what happened, but it was still very scary. What I learned throughout the book is that people deserve a second chance even if they made a mistake.
I believe that whoever is grading my paper will see that I put a lot of time and effort into doing this book review. I hope that whoever is grading my paper will give me an honest grade because of how hard I worked on this assignment. One easy thing about this assignment was that I could relate to the book. Something that was difficult about getting this assignment done was that my great-grandma passed away on Saturday. If I had more time I would have looked at the cover of the book to look for clues. ...more "
