I kind of struggled with this one. This series is SO HYPED, and I think that was part of my problem. I had such high expectations going in and I wanted to fall in love with it SO BAD. While parts of it are good, it mostly fell flat for me.

The first 2/3 of the book are SLOW. So slow. Fortunately, it picks up in the last third, and (in true SJM fashion) the last 100 pages were the most action-packed. I realize it’s the first book in the series and it takes a while to get going, but I just wanted…more? It was all just kind of bland. The plot and characters both. Especially Feyre.

It’s supposed to be a Beauty and the Beast retelling…except it takes out a lot of elements that make the story work. Tamlin isn’t a beast. He’s beautiful and just stuck with a mask on. He also has the personality of a walnut. Then there’s Feyre. For someone who’s supposed to be this street-smart hunter with crazy survival instinct…Ferye’s kinda dumb. She doesn’t listen to anyone and just kind of falls into living in Pythian with utter complacency. There’s absolutely no reason for Tamlin to take her into this life of luxury after what she did, but she never really questions it? All of this behavior is later explained in the book, but still. Girl, where are your alarm bells??? Lucien is the only halfway interesting character for the first 70% of the book. And considering we only meet a handful of characters, that’s not really a compliment.

The last 25% of the book almost makes up for the slow start. More interesting characters (RHYS) are introduced, the plot beefs up, and Feyre starts making decisions that better align with who her character is supposed to be. It sets up some interesting plot lines to play out in the following books.

Overall, I would give it a 3.5 rating. While I was disappointed with this first installment, I am looking forward to seeing how the series improves. Although, to be fair, I already know a couple of spoilers…so I KNOW it will get better. Without that knowledge, I wouldn’t be chomping at the bit to read the next one.
