However, if you're expecting a rundown of the fundamentals of system design, you won't find it here. This is not a good resource for a beginner, but it's very helpful for anyone who already has the basics down or for experienced engineers who need a refresher before an interview.
I knocked a star off my rating because of numerous printing and editing issues throughout the book. (I would give this a 3.5 rating if possible, but I was forced to round up.)
The biggest downside, in my opinion, is that this is very clearly a self-published book. The page margins are quite small, in the way that reminds you of an interviewee trying to fit a massive resume onto a single page. There are numerous editorial issues, from missing articles to the same closing paragraph being used at the end of chapters 2, 3, and 5. Resources are cited through full-size brackets, like this example [15]. Not a superscripts to be found. Image/figure labels are also the same size and weight as the regular text. Literal "o" characters are used for nested bullets.
I also would have appreciated a more user-friendly way of accessing the references, which appear at the end of each chapter in a large URL dump. A frequently updated web page of references maintained by the author would have been a welcome resource.
With that said, as long as you can get past the "we copied a Google doc into a publish-your-own-book site" aesthetic, you'll find plenty of helpful information for your next system design interview....more
