Also, almost every name in this book is difficult to pronounce (Celaena is difficult enough for you? Don't worry, she gets a more difficult name at the end of the book!).

However, plotwise, the book was fascinating, with problems such as a murder mystery, Celaena's need to win the competition to become the King's Champion, and Nehemia's character and problems in general (yet another name that is difficult to pronounce). Nehemia was definitely my favorite character and the most interesting part of the book.

As for the other characters, Dorian often annoyed me because of his actions with other women yet his ideas that you only marry for love, which seem to contradict each other. He was certainly the most dynamic character in the series but I still don't think I liked him that much by the end of book, although I didn't dislike him as much as I did in the beginning of the book. I liked Chaol more than Dorian character wise, but he didn't seem to have much personality for most of the book. Overall, I neither disliked nor liked either Dorian or Chaol.

I was not overly impressed by the romance in this book. I'm not a huge romance fan in general, and I especially despise love triangles. That said, this book wasn't as overly dramatic in terms of love triangles as I thought it would be. However, Celaena's lack of commitment to anyone (especially at the end when *spoiler* happens) really got on my nerves. She seems to view relationships more as just something that's a distraction more than something to be treasured.

In summary, Celaena's definitely not the best role model and not one of my favorite fictional characters, but she is interesting. I thought the plot was much more interesting than the characters (with the exception of Nehemia) and I plan to read the next book based on the plot, although I have hope that the characters will improve. ...more "
