I think it's probably fair to say that the first part of this book is perhaps a little lost. Feyre, as you might remember, has switched sides (but is faking it, obviously because Tamlin...no thanks!), and is in the home of the enemy. That's the Spring Court to you and me. But instead of there being lots of treachery and clever deception from Feyre, she's out of there in no time; a shame because I love some cloak and dagger to keep me interested. But never-mind, because after this it's one hell of a ride and so that missed opportunity was of little consequence.

This third book introduces all the players in the War. Not only has Feyre got to convince a host of High Lords to help her defeat Hybern's Army (which is HUGE!), but she's also got to somehow cover up that little thing about taking a bit of each of their powers for herself to make her some sort of super badass High Lady. Bit tricky. Oh and then there's the small issue of how she's just duped Tamlin and now kind of needs his army too. Terribly sticky situation for Feyre, but absolutely wonderful for us readers - so many new characters, each with excellent back stories (because we all know Maas is a Queen of a good back story woven in), and a particularly creepy Bone Carver and other vicious beasties she might want to get on side. I feel exhausted for them to be perfectly honest but it was delicious!

The characters really come to life in this book with even more complexity than ever before. Whilst I still feel that Mist and Fury really excelled at challenging traditional characters, breaking the mould and generally being a massive improvement on Feyre's badassery, I think this book makes the slightly more secondary characters more exciting. Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Amren, Nesta and Elain get much bigger parts in this story and I really fell in love with each of them rather than just being wrapped up in Feyre and Rhys' situation. I think Maas is really excellent at making you become entirely invested in characters, even those who might seem quite detached from the initial story-line. It makes for such rich world building and I absolutely love it. I can't think of another group of characters in a book who have felt quite so real to me.

This is a bit of a slow burner compared to the previous two books, and given that it's largely focused on finding High Lords and Armies, I think that's probably why. But when the War truly begins, wow - that's fastest my eyes have ever moved across a page! The writing is utterly unstoppable; I felt like I was watching it all happen. It's that bum on the edge of your seat kind of good where you just can't predict which curve-ball is coming at you next. Equally, there are some darker elements which are so exciting and genuinely a little bit chilling. I think this element of Maas' stories is often underrated because her characters are so addictive and often take centre stage, but it was a real tension builder in this book - not to be read in a dark, shadow-filled room though.

I still struggle a little with the romance elements. Not the building of a romance; I think Maas is brilliant at leaving me wanting more in terms of waiting to see what's going to happen between characters. Particularly after Feyre having such a swift change of heart with Tamlin - you just never know what's going to happen and who she'll turn you against! But now that Feyre and Rhys are mated, the sexual tension has kind of fizzled out (despite there being lots of sex) and the sexy scenes for me are really awkward. I think it's the choice of words she sometimes uses like being "claimed" or "branded" that just destroy it for me. It's really obtuse and a bit too yuck for me. But anyway, Cassian saves the day on the romance front - what a heart-throb. Gone are the days when Rhys was my future book boyfriend - Cassian and Azriel are like some sort of heroic Godly duo aren't they?

Definitely a nice finish to the first three books, with lots of elements wrapped up and plenty more still to come. I can't wait for the next one.
