Losing faith, a complicated and controversial topic diluted into an overall well written novel. It explores how far is too far when it comes to religion and the lengths people will go to for their beliefs. This novel has all it requires to be a bestseller, originality with various incorporated genres packed into one book. Romance, religion, adventure and tragedy all messed into this one novel; it keeps readers occupied and unable to put it down.

In normality, when it comes down to religion and the controversy of it, writing it in a teenage novel is unusual. However this book is exactly that, a teenage book that explores the idea of devoted religion. Losing Faith is not only just centered around religion however; it explores various themes including tragedy, relationships, loss, friendship, isolation, mystery and adventure while revolving around the main idea. I personally found the originality of the genre quite refreshing and impressive on the basis that in normality, this topic is not taken light heartedly.

Although so much was going on in the novel that one might be confused as to what the intentions of the book were, it very much kept the reader active in the novel and otherwise ‘hooked’, for example the relationship between the main protagonist Rie, and her sister’s murderer’s brother. This, although it could be seen as a little melodramatic, it ties the many themes of the novel together as the two characters embark on the adventure that is investigating his sister and her passionate beliefs.

One of the most interesting elements throughout the novel was the exploration of a person who has been contorted by religion in a mentally unstable environment. How religion has controlled her sanity and hazed over the black and white lives of right and wrong, “therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship”.
