I chose the novel Little Brother by Allan Baillie because the front cover looks very interesting. It looks interesting because the colours used on front cover give the book a very hazy look. I also really enjoy reading books with lots of action in them. You can tell it's a action book because in the blurb it says "the shots were so close they seemed to explode inside Vithy's head. He threw himself to the ground and clapped his hands over his ears". I really am looking forward to reading this book.

Question 2 wider reading task
As I got to the middle of the book, I was really drawn in by the storyline and the writing style the author used in the first nine chapters of the book. This is because there is a lot of action involved, and I prefer books where the action moves along at a good pace rather than long descriptions without much happening in the story. The scenes change all the time as Vithy tries to escape the civil war that is going on in Cambodia.
The two brothers Vithy and Mang, are two innocent little kids, who are trying to escape war in their country. Although Mang disappears early in the novel, he appears to be the caring older brother who looks out for his younger brother. We know this because in chapter 1 Mang spots soldiers and runs off to distract the soldiers from catching Vithy. The rest of the first half of the novel, we really get to know Vithy. He comes across as an extremely brave character. Vithy is brave because he is escaping his country all by himself. This is an act of courage as well because he doesn’t know what’s out there, so he has to rely on his knowledge and his instincts to survive.

Question 3 Wider reading task
I chose this book because in the blurb it seemed like there was going to be lots of action throughout the whole story, and sure enough I wasn’t disappointed with the amount of action that took place in the novel. From the moment of the first chapter to the last chapter, Vithy is running from place to place to try escape from the deadly Khmer Rouge. They are deadly because they killded about 3 million innocent Cambodians. This reminds me of the Nazi’s during world war two. When I read Vithy’s story I could really relate to it. This is because it reminded me of grandfather who survived the concentration camps during the holocaust. Like Vithy he ended up moving countries to have a better lifestyle in a free country. At the end of the novel I felt a sense of happiness for Vithy because after all he’s been through he ends in Australia with his older Mang, whom we thought was dead throughout the duration of the story. ...more "
