“When we see something of beauty, our brains start making chemicals. Researchers at University College London conducted a series of brain-mapping experiments, where volunteers had their brains scanned while they were shown a series of artworks. The scans revealed that the volunteers had a surge of dopamine, another ‘happy’ chemical, when they looked at something they considered beautiful, and this reaction was almost instant. Observing art can also reduce cortisol, the so-called stress hormone.”
