“المأساة الحقيقية في ذلك أن مصر لا تأخذ في وجه هذه الأزمات الحل الجذري الراديكالي قط، و إنما الحل الوسط المعتدل، أى المهدئات و المسكنات المؤقتة، و النتيجة أن الأزمة تتفاقم و تتراكم أكثر، و لكن مرة أخرى تهرب مصر من الحل الجذري إلي حل وسط جديد، و هكذا.

بعبارة أخرى، مأساة مصر في هذه النظرية هى الاعتدال، فلا تنهار قط، و لا هي تثور أبداً، و لا هى تموت أبداً، و لا هى تعيش تماماً، إنما هى فى وجه الأزمات و الضربات المتلاحقة تظل فقط تنحدر و تتدهور ، تطفو و تتعثر ، دون حسم أو مواجهة حاسمة تقطع الموت بالحياة أو حتي الحياة بالموت، منزلقة أثناء هذا كله من القوة إلي الضعف و من الصحة إلي المرض و من الكيف إلي الكم و أخيراً من لاقمة إلي القاع.

غير أن النتيجة النهائية لهذا الانحسار المستمر المساوم أبداً و صفقات التراجع إلي ما لا نهاية هي أننا سنصل يوماً ما إلي نقطة الانكسار بعد الالتواء، و بدل المرونة سيحدث التصادم، و محل المهدئات ستحل الجراحةـ أي سنصل إلي نقطة اللاعودة إلي الحل الوسط، و عندئذ سيفرض الحل الجذري الراديكالي نفسه فرضاً، و لكن بعد أن يكون المستوي العام قد تدني إلي الحضيض، و الكيف قد تدهور إلي مجرد كم ، و المجد إلي محض تاريخ، و ذلك هو الثمن الفادح للاعتدال.”
