I don't think I'll ever be able to truly review this series in an objective way, because they are forever tied to a really difficult time period in my life. I can absolutely admit that the series has many flaws, but I'm willing to overlook them all because there's something so magical about the series.

There are so many things I love about this book. The writing really spoke to me, especially (view spoiler). This is probably the one book in the series where the magic makes the most sense and strikes the perfect value between having stated rules and being hand-wavy and vague. I love the mystery and wonder of Cabeswater, and it's constant surprises were a nice touch. The Noah reveal literally shocked me (despite the fantastic foreshadowing), though the sacrifice was somewhat predictable, if only because it was the pragmatic outcome. I didn't mind not being surprised; in fact, I think the anticipation made the moment more poignant and strangely heartwrenching? I think it's hard to write something that is both character- and plot-driven, and I think this book walks that line very well.

The characters leapt off the page, and I have never instantly loved a character the way I immediately adored Noah Czerny. (view spoiler) As much as I wanted to hate Gansey (because why get attached?), he quickly grew on me because he's just...so good? And marvelous, complex, guarded Adam was so relatable it hurt. I'm probably in the minority of people who liked Ronan even before we get a POV in TDT, but there's something about angry boys that just speaks to the angry girl inside of me. In fact, the only character I didn't absolutely love was Blue.

That's one of my biggest issues with the series, in all honesty. As much as I loved the titular raven boys, I'm not particularly fond of Blue. Not that there's anything wrong with her, per se (or at least, not in this book), but she just doesn't feel as dynamic and fleshed out as the boys. Almost like she was an after thought because someone said that having all the main characters be white boys was a bad idea (though is adding one white girl any better?). I just didn't find myself as engrossed or interested in her POV scenes as I was Gansey's or Adam's, though I did love the ladies of 300 Fox Way. Thankfully we don't spend the entire novel in her POV, or I don't think I would've made it through the book, much less the entire series.

For me, this was the perfect series opener, and it's hard for me to review just this book instead of the whole series, but I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who like fantasy grounded in reality, dynamic characters, and/or found families. ...more "
