In the earthly world the story takes place in a town named Wall. This is the home to our main characters. However, Wall is a very small town without lots of room to build in. Based on some details in the story we guess that the story takes place in the late 1830s or early 1840s. To the east of Wall is a high grey rock wall, from which the town gets its name from. There is a gap in the rock wall, but villager always guard it in groups of two. The supernatural world is called Faerie. Faerie is a big place, and apparently hard to navigate. Faerie’s borders are always changing making it much bigger than Earth. “Faerie; so it is now, by the time we come to write of it, a most huge place indeed, containing every manner of landscape and terrain.” Faerie has natural exhibits such as forests, mountain ranges, skies, valleys, and mountain passes.
Our main character is Tristran Thorn. We meet Tristran when he is an infant. When Tristan was a child he never really fit in. This doesn’t surprise us though because he is the child of Dunstan Thorn, and the nameless booth slave at the Faerie Market. Tristran looked a little funny too, and because of this his sister would always tease him. “The right ear was flat against his head, and almost pointed; the left one was not.” Tristan falls in love with a heart-breaking beauty, Victoria Forester. Victoria regrets Tristran’s proposal because she feels Tristan will bring nothing good to her, “And why ever should I marry you, Tristran Thorn? What could you give me? Victoria immediately apologizes when Tristan returns from Faerie. A star falls from the heavens and her name is Yvaine. Her first contact with a human is Tristran. Yvaine is very bitter and broken when she first falls down so this explains why she is so harsh towards Tristan. Stars are not human so basically Yvaine looks like a blonde goth girl who doesn’t get much sun. The Witch-Queen is are super villain is this story. The Witch-Queen is cruel but fair, whenever she makes a promise she guarantees she will obey it. The Witch-Queen is very old to begin with, but she uses magic her age creeps up on her.
The main conflict in the book is Tristran’s struggle to return home with Yvaine. This is such a struggle because Tristran was planning to take Yvaine home to show Victoria, but when Yvaine escapes from Tristran everything falls apart. When Tristran arrives at the inn he realizes that the evil witch Lamia wants to kidnap Yvaine back to her lair and eat her heart. By eating Yvaine’s heart, Lamia will be youthful again. Yvaine successfully escapes Lamia’s lair by using the Babylon Candle. Since Faerie was so hard to navigate, when Tristran and Yvaine try and make their way back home to wall they end up stranded on a cloud. They meet Captain Shakespeare who helps them find land. During the journey Tristran and Yvaine admit they have fallen in love with each other. They arrive back at Wall by catching a ride from Ditchwater Sal.
I loved reading the book Stardust becauses it never seized to amaze me. It is both a romance and fantasy book in one. Romance being the story of Yvaine and Tristran, and of course the fantasy is the supernatural world of Faerie. Stardust is filled to the brim with amazing detail. “The houses of Wall are square and old, built of grey stone, with dark slate roofs and high chimneys; taking advantage of every inch of space on the rock, the houses lean into each other, are built one upon the next, with here and there a bush growing out of the side of a building.” That phrase was one of the most powerful examples of imagery detail. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is in search of something that will bring a smile to heart, and is looking for a wonderful romance story. ...more "
