And just a word of caution, the English used is not contemporary as the book was published in 1847. So, though it is already long as it is, you may find yourself scratching your head on unknown words and always reaching out for a dictionary.

Although the novel begins and ends with a certain Mr. Lockwood, I would argue that the main character of the story is Heathcliff. Yes, just Heathcliff. No first name of his was mentioned. And to me, he is an interesting one. I say this because he began as a positive character and developed into a dark fuming figure.

At the beginning of the novel, he was portrayed as a good young lad who was close to his stepsister, Catherine Earnshaw. They were affectionate and adventurous, running out of Wuthering Heights, exploring the great outdoors. However, it all ended until their father died. Their youthful love continued but his stepbrother and Catherine's brother, Hindley, relegated Heathcliff as the house's servant. And when Catherine and Heathcliff stumbled upon the Lintons at Thrushcross Grange, Catherine discovered a different way of life. As the Lintons are of wealth and formal stature, and they decided to groom little Catherine into a damsel. It all went downhill since.

With Catherine and him, living in two separate worlds, Heathcliff's self-esteem was trampled on. His character's sole objective became revenge. Just for comparison, Heathcliff reminded me of Joker. Yes, the infamous villain in DC Comics and archenemy of Batman. Well, in the comic, 'The Killing Joke,' Joker had a bit of monologue and a portion of it says: "... even the sanest man alive can be driven to lunacy! All it takes is one bad day." In the story, Heathcliff's character was driven mad by the cards that was dealt to him. Although he loved Catherine and he knew that she loved him back, she settled with Linton for comfort and married their son —and this must be that one bad day.

This book is deep and enjoyable. As I write this review, I remember that I may have found strange dark humor in it as well. And though the book is inviting me to do a re-read, I know I shan't. I shall only read it once. It took me a while to finish, and I would be mad to go at it again. I just learned that there a number of live action versions and I would probably watch these instead. ...more "
