This book was sooo good, there are two reasons this didn't get the full 5 stars and I will talk about that in a minute, but I seriously really liked this book! My relationship with Cassie's books has been interesting- I have a very love/hate relationship with the mortal instruments series, and the Infernal Devices is one of my all time favourite series, Clockwork Prince and Princess are two of my top four favourite books I've read this year. So I had high hopes but was honestly not sure what to expect with Lady Midnight, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this!

In Mark's eyes Emma could see a wilderness of stars and tree-tops, the fierce shine of glaciers, all the glittering detritus of the roof of the world.
It made her think of riding that motorcycle over the ocean. Of the freedom to be wild and untrammeled. Of the ache she felt in her soul sometimes to be connected to nothing, answerable to nothing, bound by nothing.

Emma Carstairs is such an amazing character, she is so well written and has so many layers to her; I really feel like I know her. She is a strong protagonist, she's caring, reckless(in a good way, not mindlessly like Clary), and has spent the past five years collecting as much information as she can about the night her parents were murdered so she can finally get answers and get her revenge.

JULIAN BLACKTHORN. Don't talk to me about Julian Blackthorn. I am hereby adopting him as my son- I don't care that in the year I'm writing this, 2018, he would be older than me- I'M LEGALLY ADOPTING HIM. This boy has been through so much and he just needs to be protected he had to grow up so fast, he is literally a parent to his siblings and has been a father since he was TWELVE. I need to give this boy a hug he deserves one oh my gODD

Emma and Julian are so sweet together, I think their relationship is gonna KILL me. I know they've got to end up together(or else I'm gonna FLIP) but god, I hope they find a way! They're so perfect together I wanna die.

My only two problems with this book was that the beginning took a while to really get going- it didn't drag but it took a bit too long to get into the actual plot line of the story. Another issue I had was that while Emma's characterization was PERFECT, the only other characters that I felt like got developed really well in this book were Julian, Mark, and Christina. But Julian has four younger siblings and I'm fine with Ty, I think he was developed enough for a side character in a first book, and I don't expect loads of dimension from Tavvy since he's 7, but I feel like for a 700 page book I should really know more about Livvy and Dru- and their tutor Diana! Granted, Diana has secrets, and I'm sure we will learn more about her in future books but still. Cassie has shown she's capable of having a full cast of completely well developed characters before (TID) and so maybe by book 2 I will feel differently, but for a 700 page book I want to know more about these characters.

Overall, I think this book was great and I cannot wait to read Lord of Shadows- I've got Queen of Air and Darkness on my Christmas list so hopefully I'll get it! I can't wait to continue with this series! I was so happy about the Tessa and Jem scenes every time I got to see them I got so excited! This wont be like The Infernal Devices for me, I love those characters and story so much, but I think I'm going to really enjoy The Dark Artifices!
