This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel about finding a way into a high social status. F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the most beloved writers of the 1920s along with Ernest Hemingway. Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. and went on to attend Princeton University. In 1917 Fitzgerald dropped out of Princeton to join the U.S Army. While in the war, Fitzgerald wrote The Romantic Egotist. The book was rejected by the publishers so Fitzgerald rewrote it. The book was then published in 1920 with the name This Side of Paradise. Fitzgerald’s most famous book is The Great Gatsby. In all of his novels Fitzgerald captures what life looked like in the Roaring 20s. I liked This Side of Paradise because it’s main focus was life in the Jazz Age, which is my favorite time period.

The majority of the novel takes place in New England and at Princeton University. The point of view is third person. The main character is Amory Blaine. Other main characters are Rosalind Connage, Beatrice Blaine, Burne Holiday, Isabelle Borges, Clara Page, and Eleanor Savage. Rosalind, Isabelle, Clara, and Eleanor were all lovers of Amory. The main problem in the novel was Amory trying to find who he really is and finding his way into a high level of social status.

I did like all of the characters because they all had something different to share however I did not relate to any of them. I liked the writing style for many reasons. One reason is because there was a good amount of conversation which kept me interested. The vocabulary was not difficult and the sentence structure is not complicated. I liked the plot of this book and the ending. The book ended with “I know myself ,” he cried, “but that is all.” (261)

I think that the novel is aimed toward young adults and anyone older. This Side of Paradise is similar to The Great Gatsby because in both novels Fitzgerald uses similar writing styles and it is the same time period. I would love to read another one of Fitzgerald’s novels since so far I have loved not one but two of his books! ...more "
