We hear from Grace in the form of written letters/journal entries that she used to document a particularly hard part of her life, dealing with postpartum depression and raising four children almost completely on her own.
Although I am not a mother and have not personally experienced postpartum depression, I do know what depression feels like and this novel provides the best written description of depression that I have read.
"My frustration and irritability and this pervasive misery drowned me in that moment and I was hopelessly out of control. Even after all of these years, I don't actually know what those moments are...the moments when I can't outrun the bad thoughts. I don't see images with my mind, but they swamp me anyway. Are they hallucinations? Visions? Prophecies? Whatever those thoughts are, they are vivid and real and worst of all, they are stronger than I am" page 38.
Grace wasn't able to find the help that she needed but Beth was. With the improvement of modern medicine and many stigmas being faced, she was able to have the happy ending that Grace didn't get.
I loved to read about the raw and real ways that Maryanne and Patrick grew out of tragedy and while their situation in the end was devastating, I appreciated how they both took tragedy as a way to grow rather than wallowing in their grief and the unfairness of life.
I want a relationship like Beth and Hunter. The openness and willingness to communicate. The fact that hardships brought them closer as a couple rather than pulling away from each other. The fact that Beth's battle with postpartum depression interrupted that openness speaks to the way mental illness changes the ways that we think.
"You know, I always thought that a psychologically unwell person would feel like something was wrong. I never really thought about it as such, but I guess I assumed that the negative feelings would feel distinct from typical feelings, so people would know they need help. But this hasn't felt like something in my mind wasn't working the way it should. It actually feels like I'm reacting in a typical way to the circumstances, so I've convinced myself the circumstances are the problem. I've felt frustrated and inadequate, and I've been thinking that was just because I am inadequate. Even as a psychologist, I didn't consider the possibility that those feelings were symptoms, and not a reasonable reaction to - an awful, bewildering, messed up " - an extraordinary set of circumstances" page 155.
As someone who graduated with a psychology degree and who is currently seeking a school counseling degree, I relate to Beth's feelings of just "pushing through" and knowing how to treat herself and yet actually being completely unable to.
This was one of the most though provoking books I've read, and while I don't agree with all the solutions that were presented in the book when it comes to women's rights and treatment of mental illnesses, I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn more about depression and its presentation in women and more specifically, especially postpartum.
(please note that this book does have some language and does talk about very mature topics when it comes to sex, suicide and mental illness. I gave it four stars for its predictability and that I strong feelings about abortion that while I don't feel are relevant to explain here, would find me hesitant to wholeheartedly give this book 5/5 stars). ...more "
