The Fellowship of the Ring is plain awesome! Everyone who hasn't already done so should read it. Tolkien's language is more beautiful than what can be found in any other book. Plus, Tolkien has heavily influenced the fantasy genre and English literature in general. Behind The Lord of the Rings, there's a whole universe, including different languages for different peoples. So on a scale from 1 to 10, this is at least an 11 in importance, relevance and beauty. Just read it!

Ok, and here's my story: For a long time, I answered the question about my favorite book with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, without even hesitating! However, to be honest, I've only ever read the whole trilogy once. After having seen the first movie in late 2001 (I was 13), I wished for and received the trilogy for Christmas. Within a few weeks, I've read the whole story, and I truly loved it! I remember loving the beginning with the description of the hobbits, I loved the journey, I loved the characters and the descriptions of the landscapes, and most of all, I loved the complexity of the world Tolkien has created, and I would have given anything to speak Elvish. The elves have been my very favorite fictional people overall, not only in Tolkien's universe, but in general (nowadays, I'd much rather go with the hobbits though). Of course I was excited to see the movie sequels. For years, I've considered myself a big fan. Whenever I got to go abroad, I'd buy a LotR souvenir. I've had jigsaw puzzles and I would listen to the film music while working on them. And I'd rewatch the movie trilogy several times (extended editions in one go of course :D). So why am I telling you all this? It's a bit of a confession. I've always told everyone I was a LotR fan, and whenever someone asked me if I was a fan of the movies or the books, I'd answer that I was a fan of the movies and the books, but that I preferred the books, because they were of course the original. I wasn't even lying, I was convinced about what I said. However, rereading The Fellowship of the Ring took me several tries. Sometimes, I'd give up before the end of the description of the hobbits. Once, I've read the first book (half of the first part). About ten years after the release of the first movie, i.e. about five years ago, I quit saying these were my favorite books. And now, it's kind of a historical moment: I've reread The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time! Not without struggling though (I almost put it back without having finished...). Perhaps, some of my favorite books just aren't made for me to be read more than once? I guess so, I really do! To conclude, I still consider The Fellowship of the Ring (and the whole trilogy) to be some of my favorite books, although I won't ever be one of those people who read it again and again year after year. ...more "
