Billions of Muslims, Christians, Jews, and Hindus, among others, rely on the revealed word of God to guide their lives. From media portrayals of our world, it would be hard to pick this idea out. Popular culture wants to make religion irrelevant. Movies and TV shows mock God and mock believers, often portraying religious people as over-zealous, ignorant, bigoted, and naive. Or, there’s no reference to God whatsoever. Do we live in a universe without God? What is the purpose of life? Can we only trust what we can see with our eyes and hear with our ears? Is there something more that calls to us from beyond the limits of our understanding? Do we trust facts alone or is there a hybrid kind of knowing that allows faith and reason to co-exist and lead us on to greater truths? The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture read by Latter-day Saints worldwide, along with the Bible and other modern scripture. People read the Book of Mormon because it answers their questions about the purpose of life. It imparts what they believe to be God-given knowledge about the way the world works, about God’s love for His children, and about their divine destinies. Its central message is that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world and that God knows His children and speaks to them today. You don’t need to be a scholar to read the Book of Mormon. Although after decades of ignoring the book, universities have begun teaching the book as part of the American scriptural canon, and considering its literary value alongside American masterpieces such as Moby Dick and Ben Hur. You don’t even need to be a believer to read it. The Book of Mormon is unique among books, though, in that it contains answers to some of life’s most pressing questions: Is there a God?
