Book cover for The Water Is Wide
No man or woman has the right to humiliate children, even in the sacrosanct name of education. No one has the right to beat children with leather straps, even under the sacred auspices of all school boards in the world.
Melanie
So true! I was scarred for life by my grade two teacher, when she put a masking tape X over my and another classmate’s mouth and sat us on stools in front of the class, so humiliating and gave bullies fodder for years! It was very demoralizing!!

Mary Wortley Montagu
“No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting.”
Mary Wortley Montagu

G.K. Chesterton
“The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected. Even when the revolutionist might himself repent of his revolution, the traditionalist is already defending it as part of his tradition. Thus we have two great types -- the advanced person who rushes us into ruin, and the retrospective person who admires the ruins. He admires them especially by moonlight, not to say moonshine. Each new blunder of the progressive or prig becomes instantly a legend of immemorial antiquity for the snob. This is called the balance, or mutual check, in our Constitution.”
G.K. Chesterton

Pat Conroy
“What's important is that a story changes every time you say it out loud. When you put it on paper, it can never change. But the more times you tell it, the more changes will occur. A story is a living thing; it moves and shifts”
Pat Conroy, South of Broad
