Firstly just wow. I went into this book knowing that there was a traveller called Kell and a prince called Rhy and a totally amazing girl called Lila. And that was about it really... But there's so, So I read 'A Darker Shade of Magic' by V.E. Schwab!
Firstly just wow. I went into this book knowing that there was a traveller called Kell and a prince called Rhy and a totally amazing girl called Lila. And that was about it really... But there's so, so much more!
Honestly the book blew me away. I have no idea how Ve can create such vivid, amazing character voices through the use of 3rd person.
Within seconds I loved Kell (his dry humour just made me giggle throughout) and his relationship with his brother Rhy was way too many feels (I mean the Krhy ships honestly does make you cry)!
From the first second I loved Lila! She is such a strong, powerful girl and I loved how she questioned why any woman would want to show weaknesses... You go girl!!
But I'm sure that Ve must go on a killing spree. I was generally so shocked with how many characters Ve killed off and just slaughtered in this one very innocent looking book. There were so many stabbings, people being impaled and then being controlled by this crazy dark magic that suddenly had a mind of its own!!
Anyways back to Kell, Lila and Rhy. Let's just get this straight. Kell looks like a cinnamon roll but could actually kill you. Rhy looks like a cinnamon roll and is a cinnamon roll (with the biggest heart). And Lila looks like she could kill you and without a shadow of a doubt WILL KILL YOU.
I mean that girl has no limits and no rules. Although she sounds ruthless and perhaps careless she's not. Her morals are beautiful 'I'd rather die on an adventure than live standing still.' That philosophy is amazing - she taught me that I have one life so don't let people trample over you. *tries to hug Lila to say thank you for the life advice but will probably end up with a knife to my throat*.
Okay okay when Rhy died that was not okay. The fact that Kell saw his brother being stabbed in the chest by himself when Rhy wasn't actually himself broke my little Rhy heart. But I now have a bad feeling about the bond, I mean when one dies the other will too, and knowing Ve one of the two will die by the end of the trilogy so we might lose them both *cries*
But the fact that Holland, Astrid and Athos just died was crazy!! It was just like boom, boom, boom I mean so many characters just dead.
The ending was beautiful but Kell has already changed... But little Rhy talking about Kell and him now having 'matching tattoos' made me laugh! I hope we have some more scenes with those two in the next book!
Now I'm starting 'A Gathering of Shadows'! ...more "
