Thought and Discussion 1. What are three “thoughts” that have occupied your mind this week? Why those thoughts, and not some others? What have their effects on your life been? 2. What are the main ideas that rule our society today? Do you think they favor a godly life or hinder it? 3. What are the major ideas Jesus brought into human history and how do you see them affecting the contemporary world? Think broadly and of parts of our world most unaffected by Christian teaching. 4. Was the distinction between ideas and images made clear in this chapter? Where do you see images most at work in our lives today? Political campaigns? Advertising? Religion? Education? 5. What images of God seem most common and influential in our world? How about in your own thinking and devotional life? In that of your friends? 6. What were Peter’s ideas and images concerning the Messiah? Do you think we do much better than Peter? 7. Reflect on the Gospel (New Testament) as basic information about reality. Is that a good way to think of it? What are the alternatives to thinking of it in that way? 8. Should followers of Jesus Christ be known as thinkers? Is thinking actually a good thing for Christians to do? How might it help us? Is it dangerous? 9. What is worship? How are thought, worship, and spiritual formation related? 10. What are some steps we can take to make sure that thought is rightly directed and used in the process of spiritual formation? How can images help that process?”
