📚One of my favourite all time novels which I can review over a glass of @sodastreamau water.
📚Mrs Dalloway, like James Joyce’s Ulysses, takes place on a single day: Wednesday, 13 June 1923. It is a modernist classic which uses free indirect discourse.
📚The novel focuses on the eponymous heroine, Clarissa Dalloway, ‘from early morning through to night of a London day on which she gives a large formal party’ (Elaine Showalter, 1991).
📚The novel begins with the famous opening line: ‘Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself’.
📚This novel oscillates between the past and the present where Clarissa’s mind returns constantly to the past when she was eighteen and in love with Peter Walsh.
📚Running in tandem with Clarissa’s story in another part of London is Septimus Warren Smith, suffering from ‘shell-shock’ or PTSD from WWI, teetering on the edge of madness with his schizophrenia.
📚Smith and Clarissa’s days interweave ‘their lives converging as the party reaches its glittering climax’ (Penguin Modern Classics blurb).
📚Two interesting points to note are that first, this novel take places in the aftermath of the Spanish Flu that is briefly alluded to in the novel. Second, this novel’s alternative name was ‘The Hours’ which became the name of the film portraying Woolf’s life later on and her suicide in 1941. The lives converge and interweave in the film and use many of the literary and filmic techniques Woolf uses in Mrs Dalloway.
📚Highly recommended!
