Book cover for White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism
I enjoy young adult literature but am taken aback by how consistently the race of characters of color is named and how only those characters’ races are named.

OMG, yes!! This is why #ownstories are so important! It is only through the eyes and words of black authors that we get to see blackness as normative. I've been noticing that in the Children of Blood and Bone series, which is set in a fictionalized nigeria past that has magic. Everyone is black, and the one character who is not, a white maybe russian mercenary, is the one whose color is named.

E.E. Cummings
“I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)I am never without it (anywhere
I go you go,my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling)
I fear no fate (for you are my fate,my sweet)I want no world (for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)”
E.E. Cummings

Kahlil Gibran
“Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky, We fell them down and turn them into paper,
That we may record our emptiness.”
Kahlil Gibran

Conan O'Brien
“If you work really hard, and you're kind, amazing things will happen.”
Conan O'Brien
