Conor is in denial about it and it is mentally destroying him. Conor has socially isolated himself and is constantly bullied by Harry and his posey. Conor keeps suffering from the same nightmare about a monster showing up and eating him. One night at 12:07 a monster appears (real this time) and tells Connor that he will tell him 3 stories and in the end, Connor must tell him one or he will be eaten. Conor meets with the monster at 12:07 every night to hear the stories. Conor does not realise that every time he meets with the monster consequences follow. The first night nothing happens. The second night Connors grandmother's (whom he has a terrible relationship with) house is nearly destroyed and the third with Harry being assaulted by the monster. On the fourth night, Connor tells the monster about the nightmares he is suffering from. The monster comforts him telling him it will all be okay. Conor wakes up the next morning and continues a regular day. When he get home he finds that his mother is in the hospital and at 12:07 she passes away. The book ends with Connor sitting beside his mother accepting what the future now holds for him.
A monster calls is a very powerful book about how even though people will eventually pass, their love for you never will. I actually really liked the theme of this book because I have dealt with loss before. My grandpa was dying from a twisted stomach and all I had to talk to was my friend Anders and because of Anders, I am the person I am now. My grandpa may be gone but his love never will. I actually love the aspect of a creature that most people would think of as demeaning or haunting but Conor saw something in the Monster that most wouldn't and vice versa. I think this book really shows that no matter what you are going through there is always someone who cares for you. The only problem I had with this book was it was too short. I think that they did a very good job of connecting with Conor but should have delved more into the monster backstory so readers could connect with the monster more. I think that even though the writing style is at a grade 8 level it is very powerful of showing its message. Though looking back I think that adding a few more challenging words or even change the sentence structure a bit more it would be at a grade 9 or possibly even a 10. I think that anyone who reads this book will be satisfied with everything it holds in store for the reader....more
