A 4.5 star addition to the series!

Ana and Din are back and I couldn’t be more excited! Ever since reading the first book in this series, The Tainted Cup, I have been locked in to the adventures of these two weirdos. You can imagine my excitement, then, when I received an email inviting me to read the e-ARC for the third book in the Shadows of the Leviathan series, A Trade of Blood!

In this installment, we find our intrepid duo travelling to the inner recesses of the Empire to investigate a seemingly straight-forward murder. What is really complicating things is the fact that the murderer and victim come from two different gentry families that have not been on the best of terms for years. This shocking, bloody event has caused the threat of an open war between the two to skyrocket which could have a devasting affect on not only the town, but the Empire as a whole. When Ana and Din arrive, however, they find that a looming war between the gentry might be the least of their problems.

If you’ve already joined the Ana and Din fan club after reading last two books of this series, strap in, cause you’re going to have a great time! This story finds our detectives doing what they do best: sniffing out the most bizarre conspiracies and murders that boggle the mind. There is something about these two that absolutely captivates me. They’re both such interesting characters for very different reasons. Ana is a mystery unto herself and I adore her seemingly cavalier attitude. Din is the stoic foil to Ana’s crazy that has his own inner workings that give him so much depth. They continue to fascinate me which is always a good feeling when we’re on the third book in a series where the plot tends to follow the same beats.

Let’s speak on the plot, though. Yes, we are following a similar premise to the other two books. A murder happens… Ana and Din show up and realize it’s a lot more complicated than it seems… Ana does some weird stuff and Din hooks up with someone… through some truly bizarre means murder is solved! And yet Robert Jackson Bennett somehow still makes it feel fresh and new! I think it’s the little hints of the politics of the Empire, the world surrounding this moment in time, that make each book feel like a brand new experience, even if the plot is incredibly similar. I think that’s my second favorite part about these novels (after the characters, of course!); the fact that the world is so fascinating and we get more tidbits each time we dive back in.

Overall, though the first book in this series will always hold a special place in my heart, I think this one came very close to the overtaking it! I was completely swept up in the turmoil, the mystery, and all the shenanigans. There are some darker themes mixed into this, as well, so a check of trigger warnings might be in order. Still, Ana and Din have got to be two of my favorite characters of all time and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
